Abstract

Nickel(II) induced a prolongation of the lag phase of growth and the mean generation time inRhodospirillum photometricum. It also induced formation of morphological irregularities (megalomorphs) and minor changes in the contents of photopigments. The decrease in growth was significant at 10 μg/mL Ni(II) and above. Growth was completely inhibited at 40 μg/mL. The increasing concentration of Ni(II) generally positively correlated with increasing irregularities of cells. The population of regular spiral cells decreased with simultaneous increase of megalomorphs.
