Mefluidide effects on field performance and processing quality of Norchip potatoes

Abstract

Norchip potatoes were evaluated for yield, tuber maturity, and processing quality after a pre-harvest field application of the plant growth regulator, mefluidide {N-[2,4-dimethyl-5-[ [(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]amino]phenyl]-acetamide}. Mefluidide applied four to six weeks prior to harvest resulted in tubers with slightly higher, though generally insignificant, sucrose concentration compared to tubers from untreated plants. No yield differences were found among treatments. Application of up to 1.0 kg ai/ha mefluidide usually resulted in a small non-significant increase in tuber specific gravity. In one of the three years of testing, chip color improved with increasing mefluidide rates up to 1.0 kg ai/ha. Increased tuber periderm development and russeting resulted from increasing concentrations of mefluidide.

Compendio
