Summary

Studies conducted since 1961 revealed that three applications of the asymmetrically-substituted triazine-phosphate, azinphosmethyl (Guthion®), applied prior to bloom to red-skinned potatoes stimulated them to an average yield increase of 15% above that normally attributable to economic control of the potato-insect complex. A similar response also was recorded in studies with the variety, Norgold Russet. Yield increase averaged 17% following two applications; an apparent phytotoxic response was obtaintd when three applications prior to bloom were made, as yield increases only averaged 4%.

Studies with methyl-ethyl Guthion and other insecticides with triazine, pthalimide, or nitrogen substituents failed to induce a response similar to that obtained with Guthion.

No apparent effects on certain physiological processes in the potato were noted. An indication that the long photoperiod experienced in the pre-bloom months of June and July may catalyze this phenomenon is presented. Additional study is needed to elucidate the mechanisms of action involved.
