Summary
The multiplicity distribution resulting from fluctuations in the four-momentum transfer in\({\mathcal{N}} - {\mathcal{N}}\) collisions is derived under the assumptions of a modified isobar-fireball model. It is found to depend onn s〈n s〉 only, and to be in satisfactory agreement with data at accelerator energy. The masses and LS Lorentz factors of isobars and fireballs are compared with the Chacaltaya data on H-quanta and SH-quanta. Events in which the isobar secondaries carry off the major part of the transferred energy are shown to have H-quanta characteristics. «Torpedoes» can be interpreted as extreme cases of this kind. Conversely events with dominating energy transfer to the fireball secondaries exhibit the essential features of SH-quanta. Thus the Chacaltaya results can be understood without the expedient of hypothetical new elementary states of matter.
