On the apparent break of scaling features in high-energy cosmic-ray components in the atmosphere

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento A (1965-1970)

Summary

The relation is examined between possible rising cross-section or change of other nuclear-interaction characteristics and the rapid attenuation of high-energy cosmic-ray components in the atmosphere. A set of extensive calculations is presented to provide for comparison with experimental data. A preliminary examination of existing data showed that the production of high-mass state (or copious production of particles atx≅0) corresponding to a rising cross-section manages to account for the rapid attenuation. There remain, however, more or less equally plausible models. The feasibility of the models is discussed in connection with the primary cosmic-ray spectrum.
