Abstract
The occurrence and taxonomy of a little known speciesPediastrum orientale (Hydrodictyaceae, Protosiphonales, Chlorophyceae), which was found during the study of subfossil limnic sediments, are evaluated and discussed. This species was found in samples, pollen analyzed since the sixties in the locality Švarcenberk (southern Bohemia, Czech Republic), but its determination was impossible at that time. In spite of some morphological differences, the population mentioned evidently corresponds with the little known alga described originally asPediastrum pearsonii var.orientale Skuja 1937 [=Pediastrum orientale (Skuja) Jankovská etKomárek, comb. nov.]. A more precise description of this species, which should enable its easier identification in pollen slides from limnic sediments, is presented, and further data about its ecology and distribution are summarized. The diacritical features of similar species are compared. The recent distribution ofPediastrum orientale consists of several localities very distant from each other; it seems to be confined to clear and cold (catharobic) water biotopes. The sporopollenin structures on the cell walls are more recognizable in pollen slides than in recent samples of living material.
