On the detection of μ-and τ-neutrinos from stellar gravitational collapse with low-background scintillation detectors

Summary

The reaction12C(ν, ν)12C* in scintillator counters can be used to measure the flux of\(\nu _\mu , \bar \nu _\mu \) from collapsing stars. Low-background counters with high neutron detection efficiencies would allow the possibility to separate the carbon excitation and inverse β-decay interactions. The possibility of measuring μ and τ neutrino masses with the scintillation detectors is discussed.
