Summary
The backward angle spectra of α-particles emitted in proton bombardment of209Bi and206,207,208Pb have been measured at four bombarding energies between ≈30 and 45 MeV. The statistical contribution to the reactions has been deduced, and compared with the theoretical estimate calculated by assuming that shell effects on level density are a consequence of the gap appearing in the sequence of single-nucleon states at the magic numbers. This comparison and the analysis of slow-neutron resonance spacings determine a set of parameters that allow the reproduction of the energy dependence of level densities in the excitation energy interval ≈(4÷5) to ≈45 MeV.
