Summary
It is shown that one can formulate a bona fide variational principle for any system of field equations of the first-order time derivative form ∂f i/∂t=δM[f]/δf i(x), whereM is a functional off=(f 1,…,f n) with no explicit dependence ont. Directly related to the associated second-order time derivative equations, the functional\(\Lambda \left[ f \right] = \sum\limits_{j = 1}^n {\int\limits_{t_0 }^{t_1 } {\int\limits_K {((\partial f_j /\partial t)^2 } } } + (\delta M/\delta f_j (x))^2 d^3 xdt\) is an extremum forf that satisfies the first-order equation at the initial instant of timet 0, as well as (possibly) prescribed boundary conditions over ∂R×[t 0,t 1] and a prescribed initial value att=t 0. By adapting the standard Rayleigh-Ritz procedure, this generic variational principle can be employed to obtain approximate analytical solutions to certain transport and other non-Lagrangian (i.e. phenomenological) field equations.
