Summary
Measured elastic scattering as well as reaction cross-sections for heavy-ion interactions exhibit series of resonances which are correlated among a wide variety of reaction channels and which may be considered as Regge recurrences in successive partial waves. This viewpoint permits an interpretation of the orbiting quasi-molecular system in terms of «surface waves» in the probability amplitude, whose properties may be studied in detail. This is done here for an example given in the literature, and the dispersion curves obtained show the existence of surface waves that in the classical-acoustics terminology are of both «Rayleigh type» and «whispering-gallery type».
