Summary
-
1.
A comparative study based on the estimation of total proteins, serum protein fractions, serum cholesterol and its esters and serum lipoprotein was undertaken in six control cases and in six other children suffering from malnutrition.
-
2.
Total protein, albumin and β globulin fractions of serum were found to be low and there was a small rise of /t81, /t82 and γ globulin fractions of serum in cases of malnourished children.
-
3.
The cholesterol and its ester level in malnourished children showed a lower value than normal children. The ratio of ester to total cholesterol was maintained.
-
4.
The ∞ lipoprotein level in malnourished children showed a significant fall. In two cases ∞ lipoprotein could not be estimated. The serum β lipoprotein was found to be higher in malnourished children. The β lipoprotein band was wider than that of normal subjects. There was also a more distinct separation of β and 0 lipoprotein fractions in the test cases.
