Summary
Thegeneralized Galilean group of a Riemannian space, considered as the configuration space for a classical particle, is defined as the set of all space and time transformations under which the Newtonian acceleration of the particle transforms in a covariant way, and which leaves the metric invariant. This definition is shown to determine the usual Galilei group in the Euclidean space case. Conversely, the Euclidean space is characterized as that having a subgroup of special Galilean transformations of maximal order. The usual relation between the Galilei and Poincaré groups holds for a generalized Galilei group and the isometry group of its embedding space-time.
