Summary
The measurements of\(\mathcal{N}\mathcal{N}\) and\(\bar {\mathcal{N}}\mathcal{N}\) total cross-sections at high energies show unexpected behaviour for cross-section differences. ρ-A2 exchange degeneracy seems to fail completely at FNAL energies. In analysing this effect one is led to question the procedure used at Serpukhov and FNAL to obtain neutron cross-sections from deuterium data. Starting from what appears to be a reasonable phenomenological hypothesis concerning the Glauber correction, one solves an incompatibility between the Serpukhov and FNAL data. At the same time, the above-mentioned effect is strongly reinforced, and is seen to originate in a non-Regge behaviour of the «A2» contribution, which changes sign aroundp L =40 GeV/c. Such an unexpected behaviour could be due to a new term, small at lower energies but which asymptotically dominates over the Regge pole.
