Summary
In the scheme of chiral symmetries, broken spontaneously and/or explicitly, we study a Hamiltonian operator containing various symmetry-breaking terms with definite transformation properties underSU 3×SU 3. The effect of these terms on the mass matrix of the scalar 0± and vector 1± mesons is evaluated, showing that the contributions of terms belonging to the various representations, combined according to a well-defined prescription, essentially of group-theoretical nature, can explain very well the experimental situation. In this way we obtain some remarkable mass formulae, part of which has been obtained in previous literature, by means of other approaches; our procedure, however, shows the group-theoretical content of all these formulae. In particular, our results suggest that a spontaneous breakdown ofSU 3×SU 3 symmetry may occur with a vacuum state, which is almost exactly invariant under the usualSU 3. Some attention is also paid to some Lagrangian models, as a realization of the abstract group-theoretical discussion.

Note the difference of eqs. (26), (27) with respect to the analogous equations (14), (15), holding for the 0± mesons. In eqs. (14), (15), the side containing the pseudoscalar mesons is «inverted» with respect to the one containing the scalar partners, whereas this is not the case for the vector mesons with respect to their axial partners in eqs. (26), (27). This difference clearly depends on the different representations which distinguish the two cases.
