Summary
In the frame of the LDM (liquid-drop model) the potential energy of a deformed nucleus is expressed as a quadratic form of suitable deformation parameters, which describe the shape in terms of small displacements about a reference ellipsoid. Starting from this approximation, the methods and criteria for determining the equilibrium shapes are taken into consideration and the related energies determined. A stability analysis shows that sufficiently elongated shapes are actually unstable with respect to asymmetric deformations. So a process accounting for fission-mass asymmetries may be envisaged as follows: passage through the symmetric saddle-shape configuration, subsequent elongation of the nuclear shape till the asymmetric instability comes into play, leading to the formation of unequal fragments.
