Angular dependence of polarization in p-p elastic scattering at 970 MeV

Summary

The angular dependence of polarization in p-p elastic scattering has been measured at 970 MeV. The results agree qualitatively with measurements at 635 MeV and 1.7 GeV and indicate that a Gammel-Thaler type spin-orbit potential is unsatisfactory at these energies. A least squares fit to the data gave

$$\sigma (\theta )E(\theta ) = \sin \theta \cos \theta \{ (0.70 \pm .04)P_0 (\cos \theta ) + (1.56 \pm 0.12)P_2 (\cos \theta ) + (0.45 \pm 0.14)P_4 (\cos \theta )\} mb/sr$$

, where σ(θ) andE(θ) are the unpolarized differential cross section and the measured asymmetry as functions of θ(c.m.) respectively. The maximum observed polarization in p-p scattering is close to 40% at an angle of 48° (c.m.).
