Summary
The cosmic-ray bursts of about 11 000 events have been measured at 20 m w.e. underground for an observation time of 2958.7 h by means of scintillators with the very large area of 8 m2. Following the usualChristy andKusaka’s analysis, a burst-size spectrum can give an energy spectrum of muons. From this series of experiments it is concluded that the obtained muon energy spectrum at incidences with zenith angles larger than 70 degrees is consistent with the one calculated byAllen andApostolakis and that the energy spectrum at vertical direction is given up to 4000 GeV. The latter is compared with the energy spectrum obtained by a simple extrapolation of observed momentum spectrum byHayman et al. using the magnetic spectrograph and with the energy spectrum calculated from the energy spectrum of γ-rays in the high atmosphere. Also, the interrelation of the burst-size spectrum and the range-spectrum of muons underground is discussed.
