Studies on the α-particle model of nuclei. — I

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento (1955-1965)

Summary

The kinetic energies of theA=4n nuclei (withZ=N=2n) up toA=40 are estimated on the basis of the α-particle model. This estimate is used, together with known regularities in the binding energies and an estimate of the Coulomb energy, to show that, on this model, there must be an additive attractive interaction between neighbouring α-particles. New physical criteria are given for the stability of the α-particles and the degree to which their motion is adiabatic; the relevant parameters are estimated by the use of quantum mechanics. A comparison is made with the analogous situation in molecules.
