Convection in the Earth's core

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento B (1971-1996)

Summary

Calculation of the adiabatic-temperature distribution throughout the outer Earth's core and comparison of it with a realistic melting curve for iron clearly show that convection in the outer core is allowed, in spite of the uncertainty of some of the involved parameters. Estimates of the maximum possible conductive heat loss from the core to the mantle and the mean radial component of the convective velocity are presented.
