Summary
The basic theory of the space-time continuum considered a 4-dimensional manifold of random variables for each Lorentz observer (co-ordinate frame) Λ is developed from first principles. No assumption about the actual co-ordinate measurement process is needed except that, whatever its details, it be describable in terms of random variable theory. The «fundamental length» λ, which gives a limit in principle to the fineness with which space-time points can be resolved, enters physical theory via the dispersion ∝ λ2 of the space-time random variable. The main content of the theory comes from the great restrictive power of a symmetry group. Examples of this power are the theorem that there exist no form-invariant (equivalently: mean fields andS operator independent of ℒ) stochastic space-times, and the theorem that if time is measured in terms of space with the aid of light signals (the Einsteinian prescription), the co-ordinate frequency function is uniquely fixed as a 3-dimensional Gaussian.

«Subjective identity» has of course a good objective meaning. As we use it, this term is identical with «form invariance». SeeA. Wightman:Suppl. Nuovo Cimento 14, 81 (1959).
