Equal-time commutators and bjorken’s theorem: General results, and applications to some field-theoretical models

Summary

Two different definitions of the equal-time commutator matrix elements are considered. One analyses the equivalence conditions for the definitions, and one derives an infinite-energy sum rule. The general results are considered for the Lee model: first, the model with a cut-offΛ is examined; next, the limitΛ → ∞ is taken (point-source Lee model), and an answer is given to questions related to the meaning of various limit procedures. The directly renormalized version of the point-source Lee model is then analysed in the same context: the results are different, for reasons which are examined. Finally, the zero-energy value of a function relevant for the whole theory is studied.

Riassunto

Nel presente lavoro si prendono in considerazione due diverse definizioni degli elementi di matrice dei commutatori a tempi uguali. Si analizzano le condizioni di equivalenza per tali definizioni, e si deduce una regola di somma per energia infinita. I risultati generali vengono poi esaminati per il modello di Lee, anzitutto per il modello con un taglioΛ; successivamente, eseguendo il limiteΛ → ∞ (modello di Lee a sorgente puntiforme), si riesce a dare una risposta a questioni recentemente poste circa il significato di differenti procedure di passaggi al limite. Nello stesso quadro, si considera anche la versione direttamente rinormalizzata del modello di Lee a sorgente puntiforme: i risultati sono diversi, per ragioni che vengono studiate. Infine, si discute il valore a energia zero di una funzione che compare in modo significativo nell’intera trattazione.

Рассматриваются два раэличных определения матричных злементов равновременных коммутаторов. Аналиэируются условия зквивалентности определений и выводится правило сумм при бесконечной знергии. Рассматриваются обшие реэультаты для модели Ли. Сначала исследуется модель с обреэанием Λ; эатем рассматривается предел Л → ∞ (модель Ли с точечным источником) и приводится ответ на вопросы, свяэанные со эначением раэличных предельных процедур. Затем в том же смысле аналиэируется непосредственно перенормированный вариант модели Ли с точечным источником. Полученные реэультаты раэличаются по причинам, которые исследуются. Наконец, иэучается нулевое эначение знергии для функции, относяшейся ко всей теории.

  6. IN fact, frequently one has an intermediate situation: only a «canonical» part of the ETC is known,e.g. in an algebraic framework. In this case, Bjorken’s theorem leads to the complete expression of the ETC matrix elements,i.e. to the one containing also «covariance» (or «Schwinger») (6) terms. This point will not be discussed further, as it is irrelevant for the problem we are interested in (7).
