Some criticisms of phenomenological models

Summary

We prove here that some phenomenological models often used to describe experimental data in the framework of many-channel scattering can be obtained as approximations of various kinds of theD/D formalism we have previously developed. In this paper, we limit ourselves to the analysis of the rational approximation to which varying-width Breit-Wigner formulae as well as the effective-range theory of Ross and Shaw are connected. Using theD/D formalism, we can easily prove relative irreducibility properties of these models. We can, therefrom, deduce an explanation concerning the diverging descriptions—obtained through these models—of the same experimental data. This is, in particular, shown by means of an analysis of theS 11-wave ofπ N scattering; we are also led to emphasize some arguments to explain the deviation of the phenomenological Y*0(1405) coupling constant from the unrefinedSU 3 predictions. We are thus led to ask a question about the very nature of a resonance: is it a single pole of theT-matrix or of theK-matrix?

  9. As we shall see hereafter, the rational models can be defined as approximations of various kinds of theB λ(s)- orD-function(s) on the whole complex plane. We examine in another paper another kind of approximation in the framework of local models (2,3,7) to which the Breit-Wigner formulae with fixed widths must be added.
