Role of vagus nerve on upper airways-induced bronchoconstriction

Abstract

The influence of the vagus nerve on bronchoconstriction induced by exposure to allergen and acetylcholine (ACH) was tested in two dogs breathing through an endotracheal tube and through a specially designed mask. The prevention of bronchial reaction by bilateral vagus blockade was demonstrated to be similar for animals breathing via mouth and via the tracheal tube.

The effect of vagus blockade, preventing the bronchoconstriction obtained by allergen aerosol and ACH aerosol, and the recovery of the vagus effect after release of the blockade, was studied in a series of four dogs.
