Summary
Structural observations have been carried out, mostly by transmission electron microscopy, for a study on the oxidation characteristics of zirconium. At the initial stage of the oxidation at 400 °C and for oxidations at high temperature (800 °C) there appear moiré patterns which have been referred to the oxygen-saturated layer occurring on zirconium. The presence of cubic zirconium oxide has always been ascertained in the oxide films. Up to thicknesses ≃4000 Å the oxide films show an epitaxial structure with subgrains corresponding to average distances of 550 Å; no dependence of these on the film thickness has been experienced. On the basis of the above observations an interpretation has been put forward in which the cubic oxidation law of zirconium is explained in terms of lattice defects acting as anion vacancy sinks in the oxide film. With their density, the same lattice defects can also explain the low-temperature hydrogen permeability stage through the oxide film.
