The role of quenched-ln embryos in solid-state nucleation processes

Abstract

Consideration is given the possibility that embryos retained from a higher temperature may assist in subsequent nucleation processes. Quantitative thermodynamic and kinetic constraints are found to exist for formation and retention of “precipitation-type” embryos. It is shown for dilute solutions that the spectrum of concentration fluctuations is independent of temperature, so that quenching rate is not a consideration. Various suggestions for the martensite nucleus are considered.
