Study of annealing twins in fcc metals and alloys

Abstract

Systematic measurements have been made of grain size,D, twin density,p, and twin width, w, after various temperatures and times of annealing to study the evolution and growth of annealing twins in pure nickel. Functional relationships between these parameters have been experimentally established. Twin density,p, is found to be given by the relation

$$\frac{p}{{p_o }} = \frac{{D_o }}{D}\log \frac{D}{{D_o }}$$

wherep 0 andD 0 are constants independent of temperature. An analysis of published results in other fcc metals and alloys shows an excellent agreement with the proposed formulation. The temperature dependence observed in the present study is in agreement with other available experimental results and in conflict with a model of the formation of annealing twins proposed by Gleiter.
