Abstract
A total of 75 seed samples of 29 species of Cruciferae have been analyzed for fatty acid composition by gas chromatography. All but three species contained erucic acid in the seed oils at levels ranging from 1% to 57%. Linolenic acid was present in all samples; the levels ranged from 2% to 55%. A considerable variation in fatty acid patterns was observed at the intraspecific level forSinapis arvensis. Species from five of the generas studied may have potential as new crops, namelyBarbarea, Conringia, Erysimum, Hesperis andSisymbrium.
