Irrigation of the rectum with carcinocidal solutions during anterior resection

An improved technic

  • Published:
Diseases of the Colon & Rectum

Summary

In a number of cases, during resection of rectosigmoid carcinoma, malignant cells implanted at the site of the anastomosis cause recurrence. This can be prevented by transproctoscopic irrigation of the rectal stump during the operation, using a solution of perchloride of mercury. However, many surgeons are deterred from using this technic because they find that it is somewhat awkward. In this communication, a convenient method for performing the irrigation, using a specially designed flexible rectal tube, is described. No special skill is required to use it and it can be applied easily whenever restorative resection is performed. Thus, many recurrences should be prevented.
