coloproctology Aims and scope

Abstract

Colostomy irrigation is a long existing method to facilitate the management of permanent colostomies, thus, giving the patient the possibility to have control over bowel emptying. Although modern irrigation systems have significantly improved handling and safety of this procedure, it must be accepted that only a minority of patients have knowledge about this therapeutic option and are using it. Thus, the goal is to provide an overview of the history and most recent scientific evidence regarding colostomy irrigation. Furthermore, issues like volume of water for irrigation, duration of the procedure and time intervals between irrigation sessions are discussed.
