Summary
A case of pneumatosis intestinalis, secondary to an anorectal surgical procedure is presented. This sequence of events has not been reported previously. The causative factors in this case appear to be the retention of flatus in the rectum thereby giving rise to increased intraluminal pressure in the presence of a defect in the rectal mucosa. The similarity to pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is striking. A brief review of this rather rare condition has been provided.
