Summary and Conclusions
Certain phases of the healing of wounds have not been clarified. Recent reports of important investigative work atempting to resolve some of these problems have been reviewed.
Emphasis has been placed on reports dealing with the regenerative phases of wound healing, that is, epithelization, endothelial proliferation and fibroplasia. Important contributions dealing with the phenomenon of wound contracture have been briefly reviewed.
Contemporary concepts of chemical factors involved in healing have been summarized. The importance of enzymes and of ascorbic acid is apparent.
Basic factors in the physiology and chemistry of healing wounds must be understood by us as clinical surgeons and we should maintain an inquisitive attitude toward this problem.
