Summary
The natural durability of the Malayan timbers kempas (Koompassia malaccensis) and keruing (Dipterocarpus spp.) was investigated. Small blocks of 5 crossties of each timber were subjected to brown rot, white rot, and soft rot attack (Daedalea quercina, Polystictus versicolor, Chaetomium globosum, Paecilomyces spec.) in a 4 months Kolle flask laboratory test. The species of fungi and the pretreatments of wood revealed significant differences. Generally, the timbers displayed a low to moderate durability. Weight losses of about 5–20% were caused by the brown and white rot fungi on kempas and keruing. In comparison to oak with less than 5% weight loss, the soft rot fungi caused nosignificant decay. Oven-dried/autoclaved samples of kempas and keruing were less attacked by the basidiomycetes than blocks after treatment at room temperature.
