Summary

This review deals with the current techniques to evaluate motor disorders of the gastro-oesophageal sphincter giving rise to achalasia and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. The present knowledge of the pathogenesis of these disorders is reviewed together with the rationale and outcome of treatment approaches directed against their symptoms and sequelae.
