Restructuring production operations: The application of time-based value-adding models

Abstract

A model which aids the restructuring of production operations from a total input/output perspective is described. This organisation for task approach offers a structured method of auditing the value adding capability of manufacturing systems prior to development and investment. Restructuring to achieve improved value-adding characteristics is considered a primary goal strategy and can be contrasted to the MRP and technology-led compensatory strategies common in the last twenty-five years. Actual live data from an electronics component manufacturer is superimposed on the model to clarify and support the concept of time-based analysis. This leads to a production systems analysis and measurement of effectiveness model which can be used in isolation of financially based methods of performance measurement.
