Summary

From the Paleocene to the Upper Oligocene (and partly Miocene) many basic volcanic eruptions took place in the Lessinian Alps (Southern Alps, NE-Italy). The greatest part of the eruptions took place in a marine environment, and hyaloclastites are very abundant and frequent among the volcanic products. Pillow lavas also are found in several places. Marine fossils are sometimes common in the stratified hyaloclastites.

Some of the eruptions took place in subaerial conditions; this fact is proved either by faunal and floral assemblages locally found in the volcanic tuffs or by the texture of scoriaceous lavas, bombs, and other debris.

An attempt is made to give some distinctive criteria between hyaloclastites and explosive subaqueous and subaerial tuffs and also between subaerial and subaqueous chilled lavas, as shown from the studied region.
