Summary
A laterally averaged two-dimensional numerical model has been developed to represent the vertical structure of current and salinity along a strait of varying width and depth. The governing equations, which express the continuity, the salt balance and the momentum equations, are solved by a finite-difference method. The finite-difference grid covers the vertical profile of the strait. Thus the surface elevation and the profiles of current and salinity are determined throughout the tidal period. The model has been applied to the Messina Strait and the resulting distributions have been compared with field data. Reasonable agreement has been obtained, the model is capable of reproducing the general features of strait circulation.
