Summary

An isocratic high-performance liquid chromatography method for the analysis of phenolic aldehydes, ketones and acids produced from the alkaline oxidation of lignin by CuO is described. The validated method was used for quantitation of lignin degradation phenols in a sediment core (450 cm) of the Infernão Lake (an oxbow lake of the Moji-Guaçu River, São Paulo, Brazil) to reconstruct paleoenvironmental changes responsible for the formation of this lake.
