Results of technical and statistical analyses of electroencephalograms with regard to objectivity in clinical diagnosis

Abstract

In automatic e.e.g. evaluation, relationships between medical, technical and statistical problems must be studied. On the basis of this principle, a technical method of analysis is presented following the visual-manual principles of clinical evaluation of frequency and amplitude. Examples demonstrate the application to clinical e.e.g. curves. The examinations of interval spectra with statistical functions reveals new facts and knowledge as regards the interval structures and the necessity of reconsidering the problem of the clear characterisation of interval spectra with the usual clinical evaluation parameters.

Dans l'évaluation automatique des E.E.G., la relation entre les problèmes statistiques, techniques et médicaux doit être étudiée. A partir de ce principe, une méthode technique d'analyse est présentée d'après les principes visuo-manuels d'évaluation clinique de l'amplitude et de la fréquence. Des exemples démontrent l'application aux courbes cliniques d'E.E.G. L'examen du spectre d'intervalles avec les fonctions statistiques apporte de nouvelles connaissances et données concernant la structure des intervalles et démontre la nécessité de réviser le problème de caractériser clairement les spectres d'intervalles avec les paramètres d'évaluation clinique habituels.

Bei der automatischen EEG-Auswertung sind die Verhältnisse zwischen medizinischen, technischen und statistischen Problemen zu untersuchen. Auf Grund dieses Prinzips wird ein technisches Analyseverfahren entsprechend den visuell-manuellen Prinzipien der klinischen Beurteilung von Frequenz und Amplitude vorgestellt. Beispiele zeigen die Anwendung auf klinische EEG-Kurven. Die Untersuchung der Intervall-Spektren mit statistischen Funktionen führt zu neuen Tatsachen und Erkenntnissen in bezug auf die Intervallstrukturen und beweist, daß es notwendig ist, das Problem der klaren Charakterisierung von Intervall-Spektren mit den gewöhnlichen klinischen Beurteilungsparametern erneut in Erwägung zu ziehen.
