Abstract

Ureteral obstruction has been known to reduce the renal concentration gradients of chloride, sodium, urea, and osmolality. A quantitative analysis of the factors responsible for the decrease in the gradients has been performed. By applying the equation of conservation of matter to data obtained in this laboratory it is concluded that:a. at least, 62.5 per cent of the decrease in concentration gradients is due to drainage by circulatory vessels;b. at most, 25 per cent of the decrease is due to increase in water content of medulla; andc. at most, 12.5 per cent of the decrease is due to diffusion of solutes through the interstitium.
