The design of modern instrumentation for the measurement of gas expired from the lung

Abstract

A computational technique which leads to a manyfold reduction in the time required to obtain accurate measurements of gas volumes in pulmonary function studies is described. The function-of-function rule, used here to achieve an indirect analogue implementation of the integral of one variable with respect to another which is not time, is the basis for the design of new computer circuitry. Errors and other trade-offs inherent in this and earlier methods used to perform multiple breath nitrogen washout studies are compared.

Sommaire
