Structural behaviour of a dry dock with pile-anchored bottom slab

Abstract

In this article the analysis and theoretical interpretation of the results obtained in the observation of some cross sections of dock 21 of SETENAVE shipyards is described. The deformability of a large construction, whose behaviour showed marked interaction with the surrounding soil was studied. The overall behaviour is strongly affected by the behaviour of a vast zone of piles, densely distributed and subjected to strong tensile and compressive forces.

The purpose of theoretical treatment of results obtained directly from the prototype, which are still quite rare, was to improve the knowledge needed for the design of this kind of structures. The interpretation of the results also provided a better knowledge of the behaviour of large groups of piles subjected to tensile forces, which are very difficult to study in the laboratory.

The type of problem dealt with is not limited to dry docks anchored on piles. It also concerns other types of structures, either sunk or at earthfill level, such as large resevoirs, nuclear plants, etc.

Résumé

Ce travail a pour object l’analyse et l’interprétation théorique des résultats obtenus dans l’observation de quelques sections transversales du duck no 21 de SETENAVE-Chantiers Navals de Setúbal. Il s’agit d’une étude sur la déformabilité d’une construction de grandes dimensions qui présente du point de vue structural, une forte interaction avec les terrains circonvoisins. En ce qui concerne le comportement global, le comportement d’une vaste zone de pieux, en distribution serrée, et sollicités par des efforts de traction et de compression élevés, joue un rôle important.

Le traitement théorique des résultats obtenus directement sur le prototype, encore rares aujourd’hui, visait à approfondir les connaissances nécessaires à la conception et au dimensionnement de ce type d’ouvrages. L’interprétation des résultats en question a aussi permis une meilleure connaissance du comportement de groupes importants de pieux soumis à des efforts de traction, dont l’étude expérimentale en laboratoire est très difficile.

Le type de problème traité ne se rapporte pas uniquement aux docks ancrés sur pieux, il concerne aussi d’autres types de structures, enterrées ou au niveau du terre-plein, dont des grands réservoirs, les centrales nucléaires, etc.
