Summary

The preoperative administration of vinblastine was performed to 17 patients with gastric cancer. Eleven out of 17 patients were performed the intra-arterial infusion of vinblastine in the average dose of about 10 mg and the others were administered intravenously in the average dose of about 16.5 mg. Vinblastine produced a significant increase in the mitotic activity in the gastroduodenal epithelia as well as gastric cancer tissues. In some of the cancer cells arrested in mitosis, their chromosomes shrank to form granular bodies or to form a single, dense, pyknotic mass. As there was an inverse correlation between the magnitude of the mitotic activity increase and the generation time, estimates were made of the generation time of the gastroduodenal epithelia and of those of the stomach cancer tissues. Those values in the gastroduodenal epithelia agree with those derived from other methods. The relationship between the generation time of cancer cells and the fraction of their nondividing compartment is discussed.
