Laser Doppler measurement of blood velocity in microvessels

Abstract

The application of laser Doppler velocimetry to the measurement of blood flow in narrow vessels is considered. Particular attention is paid to the effect of the finite laser probe volume (velocity gradient averaging). Successful in vitro results are reported but it is concluded that in vivo applications are likely to be confined to certain accessible vascular systems.
