Summary
The following results were obtained from breeding apple varieties with delayed leaf bud expansion and flowering:

There is a closely correlation between leafing out and flowering. The coefficient of regression wasb=0.42. Earlier observations about the relationship between time of leaf bud expansion and flowering could be confirmed.

If one of the parents of a progeny was later in leafing out it was possible by one time elimination of all seedlings bursting into leaf early to delay the leaf break of the rest of the population by about 14 days over comparable varieties. The selection might be done in the second year of growth.

The results of segregation of leaf bud expansion show, that delayed leaf break is polygenic and that this character is prevalent. The character of delayed leaf bud expansion frequently segregated transgressively.
