Industrial and international standardization of microbial pesticides — I.Bacillus thuringiensis

Abstract

Bacillus thuringiensis preparations are standardized by bioassay based on a comparison with a reference standard preparation. By this way the standardization of industrial formulations is satisfactory in order to maintain a constant quality within a given product.

International standardization is quite another problem and cannot be achieved by facing only standardized titration methods, since other factors, particularly the used strains, contribute to different host activity.

An account is given of the actual situation with historical backgrounds and some suggestions are made to avoid possible pitfall. Essentially it would be most useful to demonstrate the biological activity differences of different products. This work could be done by the different specialized laboratories with the help of internationally distributed standard preparations of each proposed serotype and using various technics and multiple test insects.

Résumé

Les préparations à base deBacillus thuringiensis sont étalonnées par titrage biologique par rapport à une préparation de référence. Par cette méthode l'étalonnage des formulations industrielles est satisfaisant et permet de s'assurer du maintien de la qualité d'une préparation donnée.

L'étalonnage à l'échelle internationale est un autre problème qui ne peut être résolu uniquement par les méthodes de titrage biologique car d'autres facteurs, tels que la nature des souches considérées, contribuent aux différences d'activité à l'égard d'un même insecte-hôte.

Il est fait le point des connaissances actuelles dans ce domaine avec un rappel des données historiques et des suggestions sont proposées pour éviter d'éventuelles confusions. Il apparaît essentiel de mettre en évidence les différences d'activité biologique selon les préparation. Cette tâche revient aux divers laboratoires spécialisés en ayant recours à des préparations-étalons pour chaque sérotype distribuées internationalement, à l'aide de techniques variées sur plusieurs insectes-tests.
