With his brother, he has compiled several poetry anthologies for classroom use, notably theTouchstones series (revised editions 1987–1988),Double Vision (1990), andPainting with Words (1995), all published by Hodder & Stoughton. He has also coauthored two books for teachers:Teaching Literature 9–14 (Oxford University Press, 1985) andYoung Readers Responding to Poems (Routledge 1988). He has written many articles and chapters on literature and learning. His most recent book,Secondary Worlds: Literature Teaching and the Visual Arts (Open University Press, 1992), indicates his ongoing research interest in the relationship between the visual and verbal arts from historical, theoretical, and pedagogical points of view.
