Needle biopsy for muscle diagnosis and research: an Italian experience

Abstract

We report our experience of needle biopsy over the past two and a half, viz. 395 cases. We find that the technique meets the needs of diagnosis and research very satisfactorily. We describes its advantages over open biopsy and recommend it in preference to the latter, provided that the necessary technical skill for processing the sample is available.

Viene qui riportata la nostra esperienza costituita da 395 biopsie muscolari ad ago collezionate nel corso di due anni e mezzo, avendo noi introdotto la metodica nel nostro Istituto nel 1981. Noi troviamo che la metodica corrisponda in modo molto soddisfacente alle esigenze diagnostiche e di ricerca nel campo delle malattie neuromuscolari. Descrivendone i suoi vantaggi nei confronti di quella a «cielo aperto», ne suggeriamo l'impiego in alternativa a quest'ultima, fatta salva l'abilità tecnica necessaria per la preparazione del campione muscolare prelevato.
