Summary
Isosteres in the linear range of the adsorption isotherm can be determined siply by means of a gas chromatograph as used for quantitative routine analysis. The assumption of a linear isotherm is checked. The method is developed, as shown, by consequently combining well known rules from the fields of gas chromatography, adsorption and hydrodynamics. The fifference is pointed out between thermodynamic data derived from isosteeres under well defined conditions and those data determined solely by retention measurements. The method is demonstrated using the adsorption of benzene on Porasil C. By comparing entropy changes derived from experimental data with those calculated theoretically, it is shown that there is no immobile adsorption under the conditions given but rather a highly mobile one.
