Limited heating rates in strongly coupled particle beams

Abstract

We investigate the dynamics of heavy ion beams at high phase-space densities. We are especially interested in intrabeam scattering driven emittance growth. The emittance growth rate is related to a relaxation rate, which we extracted from molecular dynamics computer simulations. Large deviations from theoretical predictions occur in the case of strong coupling. Finally, we make some conclusions relevant for beam cooling.
