Summary

Because of the non-linear behavior of equilibrium isotherms at high concentrations and of the competition between closely eluted components for access to the stationary phase, two new phenomena take place, which are not seen in analytical chromatography. The displacement and tag-along effects control the individual elution profiles of overlapping bands. The physical and mathematical causes of these phenomena are explained. The influence of the parameters of the separation on the relative intensity of these effects is discussed.
